Frank N. Howard Sr., 76, 309 S. Water St., died Thursday night after an extended illness. Mr. Howard, son of James and Lurena Howard, was born Aug. 30, 1891, in Darlington. His family moved to Crawfordsville when he was very young and he lived his entire life in this community. Mr. Howard was graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1910 and earned his A.B. degree in chemistry from Wabash College in 1914. Mr. Howard went to work in 1914 for Crabbs Reynolds Taylor Co., where he worked until 1933 as general field seed manager. In 1933 he joined two local men, Frank Simms and Herman Wright, in forming the insurance agency Howard Simms Wright, Inc., with offices in the Ben Hur Building. As the surviving partner in this agency, he worked until his retirement in 1965. During his life he was active in many political, social and economic affairs of this community. He served two terms on the Crawfordsville City Council during which terms both the Municipal Building and the Crawfordsville Electric Light & Power Co. were acquired. For many years he served as treasurer of the Wabash College Alumni Association which he helped organize in 1928. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and belonged to all the Masonic bodies here. He also was a past patron of the Eastern Star. He was a member of Kiwanis Club and served as president of that organization in 1931. Mr. Howard had been a member of First Methodist Church for over 65 years. In 1914 he married Mary Elizabeth Byrd Howard who survives. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary on Nov. 24, 1964. He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. One son, Frank N. Howard Jr., and three granddaughters, JoLynn, Mary Leslie and Lauren Jay, survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, Dec. 2, at Hunt & Sons at 2 p.m. in charge of Rev. Frank Little, with burial to follow in the Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from Friday afternoon on. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart Fund.
